The GYROTONIC EXPANSON SYSTEM®
GYROTONIC®equipment and training offer a unique system of exercises that embrace some of the same movement principles also found in yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and tai chi. Created by Juliu Horvath, this exercise methodology stretches and strengthens muscles, while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening connective tissues in and around the joints of the body. These exercises are synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, thus enhancing aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promoting neuro-muscular rejuvenation.
GYROTONIC® exercises offer complete freedom of movement. The system is fully adjustable and it can meet the needs of many people with varying body types and levels of strength. The even and constant resistance in the handle unit and pulley tower, (through the triple reduction in the pulleys), completely eliminates the jarring that takes place at the beginning and end of exercises performed on conventional exercise equipment, when many injuries occur. The circular, spiraling and undulating movements that characterize the GYROTONIC EXPANSON SYSTEM® help to increase the functional capacity of the spine, contributing to a spherical and three-dimensional awareness, resulting in total equilibrium.
GYROKINESIS® Methodology
Years before Juliu Horvath developed Gyrotonic equipment, he created a movement system which is known as GYROKINESIS®. Embracing the same Gyrotonic principles, GYROKINESIS® exercises are performed without the use of equipment. Instead, one begins exercising while sitting on a stool, following this with movement sequences performed on a floor, and one finishes by performing standing exercises.
As the core of Horvath’s methodologies, GYROKINESIS® movements work the entire body through seven natural movements and elements of spinal stimulation: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist and circular. All other joints are stimulated as well. Deeply rooted in biology it emphasizes more fluid, organic movements instead of mechanical ones.
By performing these exercises, one can systematically and gently work joints and muscles through the rhythmic, undulating and spiraling movements that are synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns. These breathing patterns enhance the melodic quality of these movements.
Fluidity is the key. Postures are not held for long periods of time. Instead, postures are smoothly and harmoniously connected through the use of breath, making exercises appear and feel more like dance rather than traditional yoga.
One begins a class by performing self-massage and by using simple breathing patterns that awaken the body. While seated on a stool, one next focuses on the spine and pelvis using movements that mobilize the spine through all seven possibilities mentioned previously. The same exercise patterns are expanded to help move the hip, knee, hamstring, quadriceps and other joints and muscles in all possible directions. Corresponding breathing patterns performed with every movement awaken and strengthen the nervous system, thus opening up the energy pathways, oxygenating the blood, and stimulating the internal organs.
GYROKINESIS® methodology helps one to invigorate and re-educate the body, so that movements can be carried out with fluidity, relaxation and power.
